A Culinary Odyssey: Tasting Our Way Through Indonesia

From spicy Padang dishes to sweet Javanese delicacies and unique culinary creations from Sulawesi, Indonesian cuisine is a tantalizing blend of flavors and traditions. Join us on this culinary journey through the archipelago as we dive into regional specialties, attend local cooking classes, and embark on immersive food tours.

Padang: A Spice Lover’s Paradise

Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, is famous for its rich and spicy dishes. A must-try is Rendang, a slow-cooked beef curry simmered in coconut milk and a complex blend of spices. It’s so loved that CNN even dubbed it the “World’s Most Delicious Food”!

Padang’s serving style is unique, too – a myriad of dishes is laid out on your table, and you only pay for what you consume.

Java: A Sweet Twist

Javanese cuisine is characterised by its sweet and savory flavor profile. Gudeg, a traditional dish from Yogyakarta in Central Java, perfectly exemplifies this. This slow-cooked jackfruit stew is sweetened with palm sugar and served with spicy krecek (stewed cow skin) and white rice.

A cooking class in Yogyakarta gave us a hands-on experience in creating these traditional dishes. There’s nothing quite like grinding your own spices and tasting the fruits of your labor!

Sulawesi: A Seafood Haven

Sulawesi, an island famous for its pristine beaches and marine biodiversity, also offers a unique culinary experience. Cakalang Fufu, smoked skipjack tuna, is a specialty from the city of Manado in North Sulawesi. It’s typically served with Dabu-Dabu, a tangy, fiery sambal made from chopped tomatoes, chili, and a squeeze of calamansi lime.

Our food tour in Manado led us to small eateries known as “warungs,” where we savored fresh seafood dishes while soaking in the local culture.
