Bucharest to Brasov: Train, Car and a Stop in Sinaia

For most visitors travelling from Bucharest to Brasov, the train is the best starting point: it connects București Nord with Brașov without the uncertainty of driving through the Prahova Valley.

A direct train can take around 2½–3 hours, although some services are slower. Your full journey also needs time for reaching the departure station and travelling from Brașov station to your accommodation.

If you want to visit Peleș Castle, Sinaia can work as a stop between the two cities. Bran Castle is different: it requires a separate road journey, usually after reaching Brașov.

This guide explains how to choose your transport, buy tickets, connect from Bucharest Airport and decide whether a castle stop fits your day.

Bucharest to Brasov: Which Transport Should You Choose?

Choose the train for a straightforward city-to-city journey. Compare individual departures rather than assuming every train has the same price or journey time.

Choose an airport shuttle if you are landing at Otopeni and want to avoid changing at București Nord.

Choose a car when it supports a wider road trip, especially one involving rural accommodation or several stops. Renting a car solely for this transfer is not automatically better value.

Consider the bus when its departure point, fare and arrival time suit your plans better than the available trains.

Transport option Journey time Indicative one-way cost What to check
Direct train
Around 2½–3 hours on selected services; slower trains also operate
Softrans example: 41.50 RON; standard CFR InterRegio second-class calculation: 75 RON
Prices depend on operator, category and ticket conditions
Intercity coach
FlixBus advertises a minimum of 3 hours 30 minutes
Advertised fares from 25.98 RON
Departure and arrival stops vary
Airport train plus onward train
Add 20–25 minutes on the airport train, waiting and interchange time to the main rail journey
6.50 RON for the basic CFR airport ticket, plus the Brașov ticket
This is a connecting journey, not a direct airport train to Brașov
Shared airport shuttle
Allow roughly 3–3½ hours, with traffic-dependent variation
Direct Aeroport advertises the Brașov–Otopeni route from 110 RON
Confirm the fare, direction and pickup point for your booking
Car
Use 3–4 hours as a planning allowance, not a guarantee; congestion can add substantially more
Illustrative fuel-only calculation: 81–122 RON per car
Rental, parking and other charges are additional

Train prices above are examples, not the minimum and maximum across every operator. Softrans publishes its route fare with the seat charge included. The CFR example combines the 68.50 RON second-class InterRegio fare for the 161–180 km band with the 6.50 RON seat reservation. Check the final price for your selected train. Softrans fares, CFR transport fares.

The coach figure is an advertised starting price, not a guaranteed fare on every departure. Airport shuttle prices also require a date-specific check. FlixBus route information, Direct Aeroport routes.

Bucharest to Brasov by Train

Which Stations Should You Use?

Search for:

  • Departure: București Nord, also known as Gara de Nord.
  • Arrival: Brașov.

Check the exact station names before paying. A city name in a search result is not a substitute for confirming the boarding point.

București Nord is not in Bucharest’s Old Town, and Brașov station is not beside Council Square. Include both local journeys when comparing the train with other options.

If you are spending time in the capital first, our Bucharest travel guide can help you organise sightseeing separately from your departure day.

How Long Does the Train Take?

Selected direct services take roughly 2½–3 hours. For example, Softrans’s published timetable includes a 2-hour-33-minute journey between București Nord and Brașov. Other departures take longer, so compare the actual journey duration rather than choosing only by departure time. Softrans timetable.

Treat this as station-to-station time. For planning, add:

  • Travel from your accommodation to București Nord.
  • A comfortable boarding margin.
  • Travel from Brașov station to your accommodation.

Arriving at the departure station around 20–30 minutes early is a sensible allowance for an unfamiliar station. It is a planning recommendation, not a formal check-in requirement.

Which Train Operator Should You Choose?

CFR Călători is an obvious starting point, but it is not the only operator on this route. Softrans and Transferoviar Călători also publish București Nord–Brașov services. Transferoviar route information.

Compare:

  1. Departure and arrival times.
  2. Total journey duration.
  3. Final fare, including any reservation.
  4. Whether your chosen departure stops at Sinaia.
  5. Change and refund conditions.

Buy from the operator running your selected service. Do not assume that a ticket issued by one company can be used on another company’s train.

Bucharest to Brasov Train Tickets and Prices

Where to Buy Tickets

For CFR services, use the official CFR booking website.

A straightforward booking process is:

  1. Enter București Nord and Brașov.
  2. Choose your date and passenger category.
  3. Compare direct departures.
  4. Check the operator, class, reservation and final total.
  5. Confirm the passenger details and payment.
  6. Save the issued ticket where you can access it offline.

CFR states that printing its online ticket is not compulsory. Keep the electronic ticket or ticket ID available and carry identification. Its current online guidance permits purchases up to departure, but buying at the last moment leaves little room for payment problems or limited availability. CFR online-ticket guidance.

For another operator, use that company’s own booking instructions. Softrans, for example, has a separate reservation website.

Why Do Prices Differ?

There is no single universal “Bucharest to Brasov train price”.

The operator, train category, class, reservation requirement and any applicable discount can change the total. A lower-priced service is not necessarily much slower, and a more expensive ticket does not remove the possibility of disruption.

Use the final booking-screen price for your decision. Published distance-based fare tables may exclude the reservation charge.

Should You Book in Advance?

Advance booking is sensible when:

  • You need a particular departure.
  • You are travelling with other people and want to sit together.
  • Your journey connects with a booked visit or onward transport.
  • You are travelling during a busy weekend or holiday period.

CFR’s domestic online booking window is generally up to 30 days. If a distant date is unavailable, it does not automatically mean the train is sold out. Check the booking window before changing your plans. CFR booking conditions.

For luggage, choose bags you can comfortably move through the station and onto the train. Check the operator’s rules for oversized items, bicycles or other equipment rather than assuming every service offers the same facilities.

Getting from Brașov Station to the Old Town

Plan a local connection after arriving by train.

RATBV’s bus 4 connects Gara Brașov with Livada Poștei, a useful arrival point for the historic centre. Check the current timetable and direction before boarding. Official bus 4 route.

A taxi or app-booked ride can be more convenient with substantial luggage, but use the live fare or an agreed charging method rather than relying on a fixed price quoted in an old guide.

Check your accommodation’s entrance and vehicle access, especially if it is on a pedestrian street. Being dropped near the Old Town does not always mean being dropped at the door.

For your first evening, keep plans simple: check in, walk around the centre and leave longer excursions for the following day.

Bucharest Airport to Brasov

This section concerns Henri Coandă Airport, Otopeni — airport code OTP. If your flight uses Băneasa, code BBU, check the appropriate connection instead.

Option 1: Airport Train to București Nord, Then Brașov

The rail-based journey has two stages:

  1. Henri Coandă Airport → București Nord.
  2. București Nord → Brașov.

CFR publishes an airport-train journey time of approximately 20–25 minutes and a basic fare of 6.50 RON without a reserved seat. An optional reservation and some purchasing arrangements can add to the cost. Official CFR airport-train information.

Add time for leaving the terminal, waiting for the airport train and changing at București Nord. Do not book a tight connection based solely on the aircraft’s scheduled landing time.

Your Brașov train may depart only a short distance from the arriving airport train, but that does not protect you from a delayed flight or missed departure.

Option 2: Shared Airport Shuttle

A shared shuttle avoids the trip into București Nord and the train interchange.

Direct Aeroport publishes services between Otopeni and Brașov. Check the exact departure, meeting point, destination stop and delay policy before booking. A shuttle advertised as serving Brașov does not necessarily include your accommodation’s address. Operator’s Brașov–Otopeni information.

Ask what happens if your flight arrives late. Do not assume that a shared departure waits indefinitely.

Which Airport Option Is Better?

Choose based on your arrival time and the complete connection:

  • Rail: useful when onward trains fit your arrival and you are comfortable changing with your bags.
  • Shuttle: useful when a suitable departure avoids an inconvenient interchange.
  • Overnight in Bucharest: worth considering after a late arrival or before a tightly timed morning flight.

For the return journey to the airport, leave a substantial disruption margin. A published arrival time is not a guarantee.

Bucharest to Brasov by Car

Driving is most useful when Brașov forms part of a wider road trip. It gives you control over stops and can simplify access to accommodation outside town.

The main Prahova Valley corridor passes through the mountain-resort area around Sinaia, Bușteni and Predeal. Traffic conditions can change the journey substantially, so check navigation shortly before departure and allow more time than an optimistic estimate.

For initial planning, set aside around 3–4 hours without sightseeing stops, while recognising that a congested journey can take longer.

What Does Driving Cost?

Separate fuel cost from total car cost.

Here is an illustrative one-way calculation:

  • Distance assumption: 180 km.
  • Fuel consumption assumption: 6–8 litres per 100 km.
  • Fuel-price assumption: 7.50–8.50 RON per litre.

That produces approximately 81–122 RON in fuel per vehicle.

These are calculation assumptions, not a statement of current pump prices. Replace them with your route, vehicle consumption and actual fuel price.

If renting, add:

  • Rental charge.
  • Insurance or optional cover.
  • Parking.
  • Any applicable road charges.
  • Additional-driver or one-way fees, where relevant.

Splitting fuel among several passengers can make driving look inexpensive, but compare the full rental total with the full rail total.

Is a Car Better for a Sinaia Stop?

It can be convenient because you control the stop’s length and do not need to carry bags between trains. However, parking and the final approach to the castle still take time.

Do not leave valuables visible in a parked vehicle, and do not schedule the rest of the day around a best-case driving estimate.

Is the Bucharest to Brasov Bus Worth Considering?

Yes, particularly when the fare is attractive or the departure point suits your accommodation.

FlixBus advertises this route from 25.98 RON, with a minimum journey time of 3 hours 30 minutes. The actual price and duration depend on the selected departure. Official FlixBus route page.

Before buying, check the exact stops on your ticket. Do not assume the coach leaves from Gara de Nord or arrives beside Brașov railway station.

Compare the complete journey, including local transport at each end. A cheaper ticket can lose its advantage if reaching the coach stop requires an expensive ride or a lengthy detour.

The bus is a useful alternative, but for a straightforward journey between the two cities, I would compare the direct trains first.

Can You Stop in Sinaia on the Way to Brașov?

Yes. Sinaia is the logical stop for visiting Peleș Castle between Bucharest and Brașov.

Illustration of Peles Castle in Sinaia, an optional stop between Bucharest and Brasov

The important difference is between a train stopping at Sinaia and you breaking your journey for several hours. For a planned visit, the clearest approach is to book:

  • București Nord → Sinaia.
  • Sinaia → Brașov on a later departure.

Do not assume a through ticket lets you leave the train and board any later service. If you want to use a through ticket with a break, confirm its conditions with the operator.

Allow a Proper Half-Day Stop

As a planning allowance, leave around 4–5 hours in Sinaia for a castle visit, local travel, a meal and some margin. This is not the duration of the castle tour alone.

The castle is not beside the railway platform. Include the journey between the station and the entrance, and do not set your onward train immediately after the expected end of the visit.

Check the stopping pattern of both trains. For the second leg, book from Sinaia to Brașov, not a similarly named station elsewhere in the area.

What About Luggage?

Arrange luggage storage before committing to a same-day stop with large bags.

Do not rely on an old mention of station lockers or assume that the castle accepts suitcases. Confirm a current storage option and its opening hours directly.

If that remains uncertain, the easier choices are:

  • Stay overnight in Sinaia and arrange storage with your accommodation.
  • Travel directly to Brașov, leave your bags there and visit Sinaia separately.
  • Make the stop with a car as part of a broader road trip.

Check Peleș Opening Days Before Booking

The museum currently lists Monday and Tuesday as closed. The published adult admission for Peleș is 100 RON, covering the ground floor and first floor. Check the current ticket and access information before choosing your trains. Official Peleș opening hours and fees.

Autumn 2026 notice: Peleș Castle has announced a maintenance closure from 2 November to 1 December 2026. Pelișor has a separate closure from 28 September to 3 November 2026. These dates matter if the castle interior is the reason for your stop. Official museum announcements.

Does Splitting the Journey Cost More?

It can.

For example, Softrans currently lists 32.50 RON for București Nord–Sinaia and 14.50 RON for Sinaia–Brașov: 47 RON combined, compared with 41.50 RON for the direct journey. This illustrates that two separately ticketed journeys need not equal the through fare. Softrans fare table.

Choose the departures that fit your visit; the cheapest theoretical combination is not useful if it leaves too little sightseeing time.

Continuing from Brașov to Bran Castle

Bran Castle is not in Brașov’s historic centre, and there is no railway station at the castle.

The castle’s official visitor information describes bus services from Brașov Autogara 2 towards Bran–Moeciu, with an indicative journey of around 50 minutes and a fare of approximately 13 RON one way. Confirm the current departure and return arrangements locally. Official Bran visitor information.

Autogara 2 is a different place from Brașov railway station. Include the transfer between them if continuing directly after arriving by train.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Reach Brașov and leave your luggage.
  2. Travel to Autogara 2.
  3. Take the appropriate Bran-bound service.
  4. Visit the castle.
  5. Return to Brașov with enough margin before any onward train.

Treat this as a separate half-day outing rather than a quick stop attached to your arrival.

For choosing between Bran, Peleș and other castles, use our Romania castles guide. That comparison is especially useful if you only have time for one castle.

Three Ways to Plan the Journey

Three travel plans: Bucharest to Brasov directly, via Sinaia, or with a separate Bran Castle excursion

1. Direct Transfer: Bucharest to Brașov

Best when you want the simplest move between bases.

Take a direct train, reach your accommodation and spend the remaining day in Brașov. This leaves the next morning free for a castle visit or an outdoor excursion.

2. Transfer with a Sinaia Stop

Best when Peleș is a priority and you can manage your luggage.

Take an early suitable train to Sinaia, allow a substantial sightseeing break and continue to Brașov later. Check the castle’s opening calendar before buying the rail tickets.

An overnight stay in Sinaia makes this less dependent on a precisely timed connection.

3. Brașov Base with a Separate Bran Visit

Best when you want both the city and a castle without combining too many transfers.

Travel directly to Brașov, settle in and visit Bran on another day. If mountains are also part of your plans, our Carpathian Mountains guide can help you choose an appropriate area.

For the wider route beyond these stops, see our guide to things to do in Romania.

Can You Visit Brașov as a Day Trip from Bucharest?

Yes, if you focus on Brașov itself and choose suitable outward and return trains.

Expect several hours of rail travel before counting local transport. Check the return options first, then decide how much sightseeing time remains.

Trying to combine Brașov, Peleș and Bran, with independent public transport and a return to Bucharest the same evening, adds too many dependencies for a relaxed visit.

If all three are priorities, an overnight stay is the more flexible choice. A guided excursion may handle the transfers, but check what it actually includes and how much time is allocated inside each attraction.

Returning from Brașov to Bucharest

For the reverse journey, search Brașov → București Nord and compare the departures afresh. Do not assume the outward schedule or fare applies identically in reverse.

If continuing to Otopeni, plan the second connection separately. Allow for delays and your airline’s required airport arrival time.

For an early flight, returning to Bucharest the previous evening can remove a major source of uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to get from Bucharest to Brasov?

For a straightforward city-to-city journey, start by comparing direct trains. A car becomes more useful when you need several stops or rural accommodation, while an airport shuttle may suit passengers arriving at Otopeni.

How long is the Bucharest to Brasov train journey?

Selected direct trains take around 2½–3 hours, but other services are slower. Check the duration of your chosen departure and add local travel at both ends.

How much does the train cost?

Published examples include 41.50 RON with Softrans and a standard CFR InterRegio second-class calculation of 75 RON including reservation. These are examples, not a universal fare range or a guarantee of availability.

Is there a direct train from Bucharest Airport to Brașov?

The rail connection described here requires a change at București Nord: first the airport train, then a separate Brașov service. Do not confuse this with a direct airport shuttle by road.

Can you visit Peleș Castle between Bucharest and Brașov?

Yes, by stopping in Sinaia. Plan separate train departures around a proper sightseeing break, confirm luggage arrangements and check the castle’s weekly and seasonal closures.

Can you take a train to Bran Castle?

No. Travel by train to Brașov, then continue by road. Public buses described by the castle depart from Autogara 2, not the railway station.

Should you stay in Sinaia or Brașov?

Choose Sinaia when Peleș and a slower mountain-town stop are central to your plans. Choose Brașov when you want a city base with separate excursions. One night in Sinaia can also simplify a journey with luggage.

Choose the Stops Before Buying the Tickets

For the simplest Bucharest to Brasov journey, book a direct train and keep your arrival day flexible.

If Peleș matters most, organise the Sinaia stop around its opening calendar and your luggage arrangements. If Bran is the priority, reach Brașov first and plan the road excursion separately.

That sequence gives each part of the trip enough time without turning a straightforward transfer into a day of rushed connections.
